How to offer with ice dams?
Question by K F: How to offer with ice dams?
I can’t get on a ladder.. nothing tall ample. I never have a roof rake and they’re on backorder at most of the home improvement centers & hardware shops in my neighborhood. I’ve heard mixed evaluations about ‘Roof Melt’ — a calcium chloride tablet that is thrown on the roof. I am inclined to believe given that half the people rave about it, and half say it does nothing at all that there is operator error concerned. OR the solution was compromised by some means.
What is your assistance for acquiring rid of ice dams? I know prevention is almost certainly the best way, but I am behind the 8ball now and want suggestions. Thanks.

What do you think? Solution beneath!

Melt the ice using the hose, during the day, even if the water is cold, its still warmer than the ice. I’m now sure about the roof tablets, but the hose always works for me.
Prevention is the best answer, but like the rest of us, we couldn’t keep up with the snowfall and once the dam starts it’s to late.
Way to get rid of the dam is to get the snow away so the sun melts the dam.
If you can’t get up there to break away some ice and you said you don’t have a roof rake you could try spraying hot water in one spot to make a chanel Thu the dam. I have used ice melt on my roof this last time and it worked good. I havent heard of “roof melt” but just got a bag of calcium chloride and spread it over the dam.
I see you live in Ct and I live in the north west corner, If your close enough I’ll let you borrow my rake. If not try the hot water first. I know hot water cost is high, but it’s still cheaper than replaceing the sheat rock and insulation that it will damage if you get water inside. Good luck
